What They Do
Tilesetters cover, repair and decorate exterior and interior walls, floors and other surfaces using ceramic, mosaics, marble and quarry tile, slate, stone, terrazzo or granite.
Working Conditions
Tilesetters work both indoors and outdoors. They generally work a five-day, 40-hour week, but overtime may be required to meet construction deadlines. There is considerable bending, kneeling and reaching involved in the work.
Interest and Temperament
Tilesetter work is most rewarding for those who enjoy creating products with precise skills, while being recognized by the public. To be successful, tilesetters need manual dexterity; the ability to complete tile installation projects working from architectural plans and specifications; the ability to do precise work; and the ability to work with little supervision.
General Qualifications
• Good physical condition
• Complete an application form
• Working knowledge of basic math
• Proficient in areas of basic English
Educational Background Recommended
Good reading ability, shop math, general science, drafting, blueprint reading and welding.
Admission Requirements of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
• Minimum age of 17 years
• High School or Vocational School graduate or GED
• American citizen or Declaration of Intent
Terms of Apprenticeship Training
• 90-day probationary period
• Length of apprenticeship - 3 years
• 160 hours of classroom instruction each year
• 1,600 hours of on-the-job training per year
• Indentured to Joint Apprenticeship Committee
• Raises every 6 months and 600 hours
