What They Do
The Mechanical Service Technician installs, services and repairs industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment, motors, compressors, temperature controls, circulating/ventilating equipment and control circuits according to blueprints and engineering specifications. The serviceperson is responsible for maintaining numerous pieces of equipment, diagnosing problems and taking corrective action when necessary.
Working Conditions
The work of a Mechanical Service Technician is active and sometimes strenuous. They work both in and outdoors, on roof-tops and in mechanical equipment rooms. Must be able to tolerate weather extremes and be willing to work in dirty conditions. The service industry also requires on-call availability and overtime when necessary to complete projects.
Qualifications
A Mechanical Service Technician must be able to communicate well with others. They must have the ability to mentally imagine objects after looking at pictures or listening to descriptions, make decisions and solve problems, the ability to see details in objects and have good eye/ hand coordination.

• American Citizen or Declaration of Intent
• Be in good health and physical condition to meet the demand of the trade
• High school diploma or G.E.D.

Educational Background Recommended
• Math, Algebra, Geometry or Trigonometry
• Science or Physics
• Blueprint reading or mechanical drawing
Apprenticeship
• Apprenticeship shall be five (5) years
• Minimum of 1700 hours of on-the-job training per year
• Minimum of 144 hours of related classroom instruction per year
• Indentured to Joint Apprentice Training Committee
• First year (Probationary Period)
