What They Do
Iron workers erect, assemble and install fabricated structural metal products in the erection of industrial, commercial and large residential buildings. They also erect framework for bridges. Iron workers set reinforcing bars and steel mesh to strengthen concrete structures and roadways. Other iron workers may install stairways, catwalks, gratings, grills, screens, fences and decorative iron work. Yet others may move heavy machinery.
Working Conditions
Most work is done outdoors. Iron workers risk injury because they work at great heights, so safety devices such as nets, scaffolding and safety belts are used.
Qualifications
• Must be at least 18
• Good physical condition and able to perform work
• Agility and good sense of balance
• Algebra, geometry, physics, mechanical drawing and welding recommended
Application Requirements
• High school diploma or GED
Apprenticeship
• 3 year program
• Minimum 144 hours each year of related classroom instruction
• Indentured to the Joint Apprenticeship Committee and assigned to a contractor employer of iron workers
• 90 day probationary period
Job Opportunities
Some experienced workers become supervisors. Others may go into contracting for themselves.
