What They Do
The work of a bricklayer is divided into different categories during new construction, remodeling, maintenance and restoration of buildings and structures. The bricklayer not only works with brick, but with a variety of material such as limestone, sandstone, granite, marble, terra cotta, tile, terrazzo, cement, firebrick, caulking, acids and sealants. Different masonry materials require the bricklayer to acquire proper mental and physical skills to prepare them for the range of work.
Working Conditions
Majority of work is outdoors. Work depends on weather conditions. Work is done on scaffolding so working at heights is required. Work is active and often strenuous, with stooping and lifting.
Interest and Temperament
Persons should enjoy working with their hands and accept working outside under many different weather conditions. Good eyesight is especially important, as well as careful, accurate work and manual dexterity.
General Qualifications
• Good physical condition
• Complete an application form
• Working knowledge of basic math
• Proficient in areas of basic English
Educational Background Recommended
Good reading ability, shop math, general science, drafting, blueprint reading and welding.
Admission Requirements of the Joint
Apprenticeship Committee
• Minimum age of 17 years
• High School or Vocational School graduate or GED
• American citizen or Declaration of Intent
Terms of Apprenticeship Training
• 90-day probationary period
• Length of apprenticeship - 3 years
• 160 hours of classroom instruction each year
• 1,600 hours of on-the-job training per year
• Indentured to Joint Apprenticeship Committee
• Raises every 6 months and 600 hours
